New Name, Same Legendary Performance

Originally sold as the Mercedes-Benz SL, the latest SL will be sold under a new name, the Mercedes-AMG® SL. For the 2022 redesign of the SL, the folks at Mercedes-Benz called upon AMG®, the legendary in-house high-performance division of Mercedes. AMG® stepped in and helped to create one of the most aggressive, yet sleek-looking versions of the SL ever made.

Not only will the latest SL be sold under the Mercedes-AMG® nameplate, but it will also be sold in two unique models, the SL55 and the SL 63. Both models will feature the Mercedes-AMG®-designed, 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 mated to AMG®’s Speedshift MCT 9G transmission, as well as all-wheel drive. Boasting AMG®’s 4MATIC®+ system, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG® SL is the first version of the SL to come standard with all-wheel drive for an exhilarating driving experience.

Pure Performance

Beneath the hood of the all-new Mercedes-AMG® SL are two exciting new V8 engines, an upgrade from the previous generations’ twin-turbo V6 engines. Customers that opt for the SL55 will receive the handbuilt M117 V8 engine, this twin-turbocharged V8 engine configuration will push out 469-horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Those that opt for the SL 63 model will also receive a twin-turbocharged V8 engine with active engine mounts, which produces a jaw-dropping 577-horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.

Both models of the SL will come paired to a nine-speed AMG® Speedshift MCT automatic transmission that features Race Start launch-control. Mercedes claims that the SL55 will go from zero-to-60 in just 3.8 seconds, while the SL 63 tops that at just 3.5 seconds. These incredible times are achieved thanks to the addition of AMG®’s 4MATIC®+ all-wheel-drive system, which helps provide optimal grip in a launch situation for the fastest times.

In addition to these exciting new twin-turbocharged V8 engines, Mercedes-AMG® has also confirmed the SL will be available in the AMG® E Performance plug-in hybrid system. That means customers can opt for an SL that combines a 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor that powers the rear wheels, resulting in a combined 804-horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

An optional electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential will be available on the SL55, and standard on the SL 63. Customers will also be able to upgrade their brakes on the SL55 and SL 63, with available ceramic-composite brake rotors.

All-New Design

A new engine and name aren’t all the SL had upgraded, as it features a rounder exterior look, a larger cabin, and a shorter hood length. Nearly 5 inches has been added between the axles of the all-new SL, extending the wheelbase from 101.7 to 106.3 inches. However, the overall length of the SL only truly grew just under three inches, coming in at 185.2 inches. Cargo space will stay the same, despite the SL returning to a soft convertible top, resulting in 8.5 cubic feet of cargo space, or 7.5 with the roof put away.

Both SL models will come standard with 20-x-9-inch front wheels and 20-x-11.5-inch rear wheels, although 21-inch wheels will be available if you so choose. If you opt for the SL55 model, you can spice it up with an additional chrome package, or the AMG® Night package, creating a unique, yet refined look. However, if you’ve chosen the SL 63, you can opt for the AMG® Exterior Carbon Fiber Package, as well as the AMG® Aerodynamics package, which helps increase downforce with an active aero element. Both SL models will come standard with active louvers on the front air intakes and a retractable rear spoiler for the ultimate, high-performance driving experience.

As mentioned before, the retractable hardtop of the SL is no more, with the latest edition of the SL reverting back to a classic soft-top look. This decision was made in an effort to depart from the previous SL generations which seemed to solely be designed around a retractable soft-top. The new soft-top is made from three layers of canvas, and weighs 46 pounds less than the previous generation hard-top, and can be raised or lowered in 15 seconds. With the space savings created by this new design, Mercedes has added in rear jump seats in the SL, for a unique 2+2 design, new to the SL series.

Hey Mercedes

The all-new Mercedes-AMG® SL will be packed full of new technology, including the “Hey, Mercedes” digital hands-free assistant. For 2022, the infotainment display in the all-new SL will run on the latest MBUX operating system, which will allow drivers to interact with their vehicle in ways they never have before.

Front and center of the Mercedes-AMG® SL will be the all-new infotainment system and digital instrument cluster, creating a driver-centric experience. In the roadster SL, customers will notice the 11.9-inch portrait-oriented center display, which is also adjustable in order to make it easier to see with the top down. This display will allow drivers to control navigation, radio controls, and view vital information on their SL, keeping them informed and in control at all times.

Also coming standard on the Mercedes-AMG® SL will be active multi-contour seats, including massage features, a head-up driver display, and Mercedes’ Airscarf technology. The head-up display will allow drivers to see their speed and other vital information about their vehicle, without ever having to remove their eyes from the road. Mercedes’ unique Airscarf technology will allow drivers to enjoy the winter months with the top down, as it provides neck-level heating for a comfortable winter ride.
